The flag of Switzerland is a red flag with a white, bold, and equilateral cross in the middle. There are only two square sovereign-state flags in the world, one being Switzerland, and the other being Vatican City. Although the use of the white cross as a military ensign was used in the Old Swiss Confederacy since the 14th century, the modern design of Switzerland's flag originated in the Napoleonic era in 1800 during the Hundred Days by general Niklaus Franz von Bachmann. It became the official national flag in 1889.
